Position Summary
The Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards provides leadership for the University’s student conduct program (2000+ cases annually); including the New York campus, residential community and global locations (portal campuses and study away sites); oversee the operation of the University Senate Community Standards committee; serve as a member of the University Compliance Officers working group; oversee all student conduct data; and create/review enhancements/updates for the student code of behavior at the institution. The position reports directly to the Associate Dean of Students. Primary duties include:
- Departmental Leadership & Conduct Operations: Direct the daily operations, budget administration, resource allocation, and staff within the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards (OSCCS) to ensure alignment with divisional priorities. Direct the intake, review, investigation, and procedural disposition of student misconduct matters arising across the New York City campus and global study away locations, ensuring fair, consistent, and educationally grounded processes. Oversee the administration of the University Senate Community Standards Committee, including hearing coordination, procedural governance, and case logistics. Direct the internal management, security, and data integrity of the student conduct electronic database (Simplicity/Advocate), conduct regular assessment of departmental operations, conduct analytics, and behavioral trends to inform campus prevention initiatives.
- Policy Implementation & Operational Governance: Lead the operational drafting, implementation, and periodic review of student conduct policies, procedures, and campus standards under the strategic direction of the Associate Dean. Serve as the department’s primary subject matter expert on student accountability, restorative justice frameworks, and conduct administration. Monitor conduct trends and emerging issues to recommend policy revisions, educational interventions, and operational enhancements. Partner with academic schools, Residential Life, and global sites to align local conduct processes with core university policies, collaborating with institutional partners (e.g., Equal Opportunity, General Counsel) on formal case recording and compliance.
- Consultation, Outreach & Training: Serve as a liaison and consultant to academic schools and other campus offices to provide support, consultation, training, and outreach. Meet with school-based partners and faculty to, offer guidance, and escalate to higher University authorities where appropriate. Participate in regular meetings with partner offices including Residential Life and Housing Services, Student Health Center, Campus Safety, Human Resources, Bias Response Line, and Office of General Counsel. Design and deliver training programs for the University community.
- Divisional and Institutional Service: Represent the Office of Student Conduct on university committees and regional/national professional organizations as assigned. Collaborate with the Office of the Dean of Students staff on strategic initiatives and participate in university-wide events, including Orientation, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, and Commencement. Support the division’s emergency response and on-call coverage framework as required.
- Supervision: Provide direct supervision to two Assistant Directors, one Student Conduct Administrator, and one Administrative Aide. Provide functional supervision to staff in residential life and at global sites on projects and matters associated with student conduct, regulatory laws, and policy initiatives.
Qualifications
Required Education:
Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related field
Preferred Education:
Doctoral Degree in Education, Counseling, or Higher Education or Juris Doctorate (J.D.)
Required Experience:
7+ years of experience in managing student conduct at an institution of higher education
Preferred Experience:
10+ years of experience in managing student conduct at an institution of higher education.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Strong understanding of current and pending federal, state and local legislative matters as they affect University Life. Awareness of the relationship of federal and local regulatory laws as they pertain to the management of student conduct and grievance matters. Exceptional writing, communication skills, mediation counseling, and investigatory skills are essential.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Must be well versed in quality data collection to ensure adequacy, accuracy and legitimacy of data in NYU systems and be able to strictly follow data privacy and security procedures for data handling and analysis to ensure adherence to legal and institutional standards. Understanding of restorative practices and dispute resolution.
Additional Information
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $120,000.00 to USD $160,000.00. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
