The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Freedom and Citizenship program provides low-income, first-generation college-bound New York City high school students with an introduction to college-level work in the humanities, and prepares them for lives of active citizenship. As the flagship program in the Knowledge for Freedom network, F&C also serves as a training and programming site for educators nationwide who are launching and sustaining programs built on the F&C model.

Reporting to the Associate Director, the program coordinator manages the day-to-day operations. The program coordinator oversees and coordinates all aspects of the program, including: curriculum development; staff outreach, hiring, and training; participant recruitment and admissions; college application process and mentorship supervision; student-faculty coordination; project management; and events and purchases. The programs are funded by a mix of grants and gifts. Continued employment is dependent on sufficient funding.

Responsibilities

Staff Management

Directly supervises undergraduate teaching assistants and casual staff. Responsible also for observing daily tutorials during the summer, and bi-monthly civic lessons during the academic year, providing written and/or oral feedback.
Assumes responsibility for recruiting and hiring all undergraduate staff. Delegates tasks to work-study and student casual workers when appropriate. Primary approval of timesheets.
Primary coordinator for regular faculty and guest speakers.
Oversees all staff onboarding and training.
Develops program curriculum and trains and supports teachers in its implementation.
Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.
Student Success

Oversees high school students’ college application process including supervising near-peer mentorships and managing the full letters of recommendation process from initial staff drafts through final submission to all student colleges and scholarships.
Assumes responsibility for high school students’ successful completion of the annual program, and oversees stipend payment upon graduation.
In consultation with the Associate Director, coordinator is responsible for recruiting and onboarding high school participants in each year’s cohort, including hosting information sessions; overseeing the application and admissions process; collecting necessary forms; and coordinating with other offices for student registration and health clearance.

Operations

Oversees day-to-day operations of summer and academic programming, primary coordinator for special events.
Responsible for implementing budgets in accordance with yearly plans, including purchasing instructional supplies and coordinating staff reimbursements.
Supervises and updates program’s website.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and/or Equivalent Related Experience Required

0-2 Years of Related Experience

Leadership experience, particularly managing staff or youth in an extracurricular educational program or residential summer camp.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D in humanities, education, or related fields.

Experience teaching in Columbia’s Core (i.e. University Writing, Literature Humanities, Contemporary Civilization).

Demonstrated familiarity with the academic needs of low-income, first-generation and underrepresented students, especially in New York City.

Experienced user of spreadsheet and design software.

Other Requirements

Outstanding interpersonal and intercultural skills, sound judgment, and experience handling confidential information. Must be service-oriented, professional, and creative.

Excellent coordination, organizational, and administrative skills with attention to detail.

Must be a skilled problem solver who can meet deadlines and work well under pressure, with demonstrated skill in managing and completing multiple project assignments with competing priorities.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

General experience in budgetary planning and support.
